You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from this place when I first booked it – I mean, it’s technically a 3-star property, but honestly, the Al Dora Residence completely surprised me. The apartment itself is actually pretty spacious for two bedrooms, and there’s something refreshing about having your own kitchen after weeks of hotel breakfast buffets. The building sits in a quieter part of Hurghada, away from the main tourist strip along Sheraton Road, which means you’re not dealing with the constant noise of tour buses and late-night revelers.

What really got me was how the locals in the area treat you – once you’re staying at Al Dora, you’re sort of part of the neighborhood rather than just another tourist passing through. There’s this little corner shop about two minutes walk away where the owner, Ahmed (there’s always an Ahmed, right?), actually remembers what you bought last time and will suggest the best local fruits. The apartment comes with decent air conditioning – crucial during those brutal summer months when Hurghada hits 40+ degrees – and the water pressure is surprisingly solid. I’ve stayed in supposedly fancier places where you’re lucky to get a trickle in the shower. The balcony overlooks the residential area rather than the sea, which some people might see as a downside, but I actually loved watching the daily rhythms of Egyptian family life below.

Getting around from here is pretty straightforward once you figure out the local transport. You’re about a 15-minute taxi ride to the main marina and diving centers, and honestly, the drivers know this building well so you won’t spend time explaining where you’re trying to go. The beach access isn’t right on your doorstep, but the stretch of coast you’ll end up at is less crowded than the resort areas – you’ll actually find spots to lay your towel without stepping on someone. What struck me most was how this place manages to feel both affordable and comfortable without cutting corners on the stuff that actually matters. The WiFi works well enough for video calls home, the beds are firm (thank god, not those sagging resort mattresses), and there’s enough fridge space to keep your own drinks cold rather than paying resort prices. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, but after a day of diving or exploring the desert, you just want a clean, cool place to crash that doesn’t feel like every other cookie-cutter hotel room you’ve ever seen.
