You know what struck me first about Aqua Palms Resorts Elahya? It’s this unpretentious gem sitting right on the Hurghada-Ismailia Road that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. I mean, sure, it’s a 3-star place, but honestly – sometimes that’s exactly what you want. The staff here actually remembers your name after day two, which is something you don’t always get at those massive resort chains further up the coast.

The location is pretty smart, actually. You’re close enough to Old Hurghada that you can easily grab a taxi (or walk if you’re feeling adventurous) to the traditional souks and that little fish market locals frequent – but far enough from the main tourist strip that you’re not dealing with constant noise from those party boats that blast music until 2 AM. The beach access is decent, though I’d recommend hitting it early morning or late afternoon when the Red Sea breeze picks up. There’s this spot near the resort’s beachfront where the coral formations are still intact, and if you wade out just a bit, you’ll see some pretty incredible fish without needing to book one of those overpriced snorkeling tours.

What really sets this place apart is the genuine hospitality – it feels more like staying with Egyptian friends than checking into a hotel. The breakfast spread isn’t fancy, but they make this incredible ful medames that rivals what you’d get in downtown Cairo, and the manager (I think his name was Ahmed) always made sure the coffee was strong enough to wake the dead. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nothing Instagram-worthy but everything works, which is honestly more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed in Hurghada. The air conditioning is a blessing during those scorching summer months, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable – I actually slept better here than at home.

The pool area gets lively around sunset, but it’s the good kind of lively where families are playing games and couples are sharing drinks, not the chaotic scene you sometimes get at all-inclusive resorts. If you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll need to venture out, but that’s part of the charm – you get to explore real Hurghada instead of staying trapped in a resort bubble. The taxi drivers who hang around nearby are mostly honest (well, as honest as any taxi driver in a tourist town), and they’ll give you decent rates to the marina or those diving centers near the Sheraton if you’re planning underwater adventures. Just remember to negotiate the fare beforehand – that’s standard practice, not them trying to rip you off.
