Look, I’ll be straight with you about the Dexon Roma Hotel – it’s one of those places that grows on you once you figure out what it’s actually about. When I first pulled up to Sheraton Road (which, honestly, sounds fancier than it looks), I wasn’t blown away by the exterior. It’s got that classic Egyptian hotel vibe from maybe the early 2000s, but you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need in Hurghada.

The thing about this place is it sits in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to the marina and the tourist buzz, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the constant noise from the resort strips along the coast. I mean, you can still hear the call to prayer echoing from the nearby mosque in the mornings – which actually became kind of comforting after a few days. The staff here really knows their stuff too, especially Ahmed at the front desk who seems to remember every guest’s name and somehow always knows when the hot water’s going to be sketchy (usually around 6 PM when everyone’s showering after beach time). The rooms are… well, they’re functional. Don’t expect Instagram-worthy marble bathrooms, but the AC works reliably – and trust me, in Hurghada’s heat, that’s worth its weight in gold. I actually liked that the balcony faced the street instead of some fake courtyard view; you get to watch real Egyptian life happening below.

What surprised me most was how the hotel becomes this little hub in the evenings. The small restaurant downstairs serves this incredible koshari that honestly rivals what you’ll find in Cairo, and there’s always this mix of European tourists and Egyptian families hanging around the lobby. The WiFi is decent in the common areas but pretty spotty in the upper floor rooms – just so you know. If you’re planning to visit during Ramadan, the whole neighborhood takes on this amazing energy at sunset, with families gathering and the sound of iftar preparations drifting from nearby apartments. The hotel’s location means you’re walking distance to those little local shops where you can grab actual Egyptian prices on souvenirs instead of tourist markup. Plus, the guys running the small café two doors down make the best fresh juice I’ve had in Egypt – ask for the guava and mint combo. Sure, the Dexon Roma isn’t going to win any luxury awards, but it’s got character and the kind of authentic local feel that the big chain hotels completely miss. If you’re someone who travels to actually experience a place rather than hide from it, you’ll probably end up liking this spot more than you expected.

  The staff offered us an upgrade to a suite with sea view instead of two standard rooms. The staff is welcoming and well mannered
  
  What could be improved: The food has few varieties. Once I entered the suite there was leakage in both bathrooms. But they responded right away as I reported.
