Hotel Description
Honestly, when I first pulled up to G20-1-5 El Golf in El Gouna, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the name’s a bit clinical, you know? But this little villa tucked away at number 36 turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the crowds haven’t found yet. El Gouna itself is this quirky, purpose-built resort town about 20 minutes north of Hurghada proper, and while some people call it artificial (which, I mean, it sort of is), there’s something charming about its Venetian-style canals and coral stone architecture that grows on you.
What really struck me about this place was how it manages to feel both relaxed and well-maintained without trying too hard. The villa sits in a quiet pocket of the golf area – hence the name, obviously – and you’re close enough to hear the occasional thwack of golf balls during the day, but it’s actually pretty soothing rather than annoying. The three-star rating might make you think it’s basic, but honestly, sometimes that’s exactly what you want. No pretentious lobby with marble everywhere or staff hovering around trying to upsell you on spa treatments. Just solid, comfortable accommodations where everything works and the AC doesn’t sound like a jet engine (trust me, this matters more than you think in the Egyptian heat).
The location is what really makes it work, though. You’re walking distance from Abu Tig Marina, which is where all the good restaurants and nightlife happen in El Gouna – I’m talking maybe 10 minutes if you take your time and stop to look at the boats. During the day, you can easily hop on one of those little tuk-tuks that buzz around town, or honestly, just walk everywhere since El Gouna is pretty compact. The beach clubs are all accessible, and if you want to venture into Hurghada for the more authentic Egyptian experience (read: chaos and amazing street food), it’s a quick taxi ride. What I appreciated most was coming back to this quiet spot after a day of diving or exploring – there’s something to be said for a place that doesn’t assault you with lobby music and tour group announcements when you just want to decompress. The staff clearly knows what they’re doing, and while the amenities aren’t flashy, everything you actually need is there and works properly. Sometimes that’s worth more than all the bells and whistles in the world.
