You know what? Mama Africa totally caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. I’ll be honest, when I first rolled up to this place in Al Dahar, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star spot. But honestly, this little gem sits right in the heart of old Hurghada, and there’s something genuinely authentic about it that you just don’t get in those massive resort complexes down by the marina. The lobby has this warm, earthy vibe with traditional African touches that actually feel intentional rather than touristy – think carved wooden sculptures and colorful textiles that don’t scream “airport gift shop.”

What really won me over was the location, though. Al Dahar is where actual locals live and work, so you’re walking distance from proper Egyptian restaurants (not the watered-down tourist versions), spice markets where vendors still haggle in Arabic, and these tiny coffee shops where old men play backgammon until late. The hotel staff – and I swear this isn’t just me being nice – genuinely know the neighborhood. Like, the front desk guy Omar told me about this incredible seafood place three blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough, though don’t expect luxury finishes or anything. The AC works well (crucial in Hurghada’s heat), and the beds are actually decent – I’ve definitely slept worse in pricier places. You can hear the call to prayer from nearby mosques, which some people might find intrusive, but I honestly found it kind of beautiful and grounding.

Here’s the thing about Mama Africa – it’s got soul. The breakfast isn’t fancy, but they make fresh flatbread every morning and the local honey is incredible. The rooftop terrace offers these unexpected glimpses of the Red Sea between buildings, and it’s where guests naturally end up chatting in the evenings. I met a German couple who’d been coming back for three years running, which tells you something. The 8.7 rating makes total sense once you realize what you’re getting – it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it absolutely nails what it is trying to be. Sure, the elevator is a bit temperamental and the WiFi can be spotty (especially during evening hours when everyone’s online), but the value is unbeatable. If you want to experience Hurghada beyond the all-inclusive bubble and don’t mind staying somewhere that feels more like a well-run guesthouse than a hotel, Mama Africa delivers. Just remember to bring cash for tips – the staff here really goes the extra mile, and it’s appreciated.

  That is was in a local Neighbourhood and near the beach and some good eating places. Good host and very helpful.
  
  What could be improved: Wifi was good on the roof top but would be good if it was in the whole building however I had bought my own data so was not impacted too much.

  I had a great vacation. Thank you for your help Mohammed was very helpful everything was cleaned, we felt safe and comfortable. Mohammed is still in the building on the ground floor. Nearby there are two public beaches for 50 Egyptian pounds per person and shops. The kitchen is equipped.

  perfect place to stay in hurghada! the rooms are big, right next to the sea, with kitchen, kettle, hot shower, and mousa is so helpful!! he fixed my problems right away, offered me a delicious diner and even made things right when a shop made me pay the tourist price instead of the normal one. and the terrace is really nice to chill at. definitely recommend

  Accommodation centrally located, close to everything.. The owner Mossa is very friendly and happy to help and advise with everything. He has no problem arranging anything. There is a nice view of the sea from the terrace of the house. The terrace is very good for relaxing after an active day. The apartments are very spacious, fully furnished and very clean. His friend Mohamed, who has been working in his house for four years, keeps the house very clean and is friendly. I will definitely come back and use his services on my next visit to Hurghada. I would like to recommend him to all travelers.
