Honestly, when I first pulled up to the Steigenberger Makadi, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, you drive about 32 kilometers south of Hurghada on that dusty Safaga Road, and for a while it’s just desert and construction sites. But then you hit Makadi Bay and everything changes. This place sits right on one of the most pristine stretches of Red Sea coastline I’ve seen, and I’ve been coming to Egypt for years.

The adults-only policy (16 plus) actually makes a huge difference here – you know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever tried to relax poolside with kids doing cannonballs every five minutes. The vibe is just… calmer. More sophisticated, I guess. The staff genuinely seems to care about details too, which isn’t always a given at these big resort properties. Check-in was smooth, they remembered my name throughout the stay, and housekeeping left those little touches that show they’re paying attention. The rooms face either the gardens or the sea, and honestly, even the garden view rooms are lovely because the landscaping is so well done – lots of palms and flowering shrubs that actually thrive in this climate rather than looking like they’re barely surviving.

What really sets this place apart though is the location within Makadi Bay itself. You’re far enough from the main Hurghada chaos (which can get pretty overwhelming, especially during European winter holidays), but you’re not completely isolated either. There’s a decent shopping area about ten minutes away if you want to grab sunscreen or souvenirs without paying resort prices. The house reef here is actually spectacular – I’ve snorkeled all along this coast, and the coral formations right off their beach are some of the healthiest I’ve seen. You don’t need to book expensive boat trips; just grab your mask and fins and wade in. The water stays pretty calm most of the year too, protected by the bay’s natural curve.

The food situation is solid – and I’m usually pretty critical about resort dining. Breakfast has all the usual suspects but also some local touches that feel authentic rather than touristy. The main restaurant gets busy around 7:30 PM, so either go early or late if you want a quieter experience. Pool service is efficient, though like everywhere in Egypt, tipping makes things happen faster. One small thing – the WiFi can be spotty in some of the rooms further from the main building, but honestly, isn’t that kind of the point of being here? The whole property has this relaxed, unhurried feel that makes you want to actually disconnect for a while. If you’re looking for that sweet spot between luxury and authenticity, without the spring break atmosphere of some Hurghada hotels, this is your place.

  The staff was so friendly and really made sure we felt at comfortable. Food was good and lots of choices during breakfast and dinner. A la Carte lunch was limited but good. The restaurants had good food to offer too.
